Coral Spawning
Tuesday, 20 September 2011 14:06

Yes it is that time of the year again, as many of you know September and October are the months where we can see coral spawning.  This is an amazing experience especially seeing the Boulder Star Coral and Blushing Star Corals releasing their eggs, it is almost like a mini firework display.  Most of the activity happens during the night but some of the sponges also spawn during the day.

Belmar Diving are arranging guided dives during this time for those of you who would like to experience this unique event.  There are some predications about what is spawning when based on previous years’ experience, but this is not an exact science.  For more details on times and dates please All the corals and sponges are spawning during this period, but all on different dates and times, click on this link to find out the details: http://www.bmp.org/coralspawning.html

Ultra Violet Night Diving (UV)
Thursday, 07 July 2011 12:37

Belmar dive shop has now introduced Ultra Violet (UV) night diving as a new experience for our diving guests. With a special blue light and a filter for your dive mask this night dive will totally amaze you. This is a great dive for people with some night diving experience who would like to try something different. The fluorescence is not the same as bioluminescence which you will be able to see on almost any night dive. During a UV night dive you will see the beautiful corals and sponges like you have never seen them before and array of colors yellow, orange, white, red, gold, purple… and in a magical  display of light. For those of you who have seen the film Avatar this experience is like being in the film. Come and speak to us here in the dive shop to book this experience. We only take out small groups of up to 5 people at a time to make sure it is really a dive to remember.

Sara Brandsen – She will be Missed
Thursday, 07 July 2011 12:30

We are very sad to inform you that our dear colleague Sara Brandsen passed away on June 23rd 2011.  As some of you may know earlier this year Sara was diagnosed with a very advanced and aggressive type Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and spent the past few months in the Netherlands bravely trying to fight this terrible disease.  Sara was with her partner Joep and her family at home when she passed away.

Sara joined the Belmar team in November 2007 working in the office.  During her spare time she decided to continue her dive education becoming a PADI Advanced and then Rescue diver.  She then realized she had a real passion for diving and in November 2008 decided during her free time to study for the PADI Dive Master course with a view to becoming part of the Belmar Dive Team.  Finally after a hard 6 months of work Sara joined the dive team as a Dive Master in May 2009.  During her time as a Dive Master Sara became much more confident as self assured and was finally persuaded to continue on to be a PADI Open Water Instructor.

In December 2010 Sara joined the Instructor Development course at the Buddy Dive Academy and passed with flying colors.  Although her teaching career was very short before she became ill Sara was a natural teacher and made her students feel very safe and secure.

For those of you who knew Sara you will remember her infectious smile, positive attitude and zest for life.  She was a valued and loved member of the Belmar and Buddy Dive family and we will remember her always and miss her terribly.
